This course will teach you how to help students enrolled in Starfish Swim School red stage put on a lifejacket, float on back and kick 6 metres/20 ft (safety benchmark), and jump in, submerge, recover for air and roll on the back (kicking and finning) for five seconds performed in swimwear and regular clothes (swim benchmark).

Learning Objectives

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of air recovery in swim skill development for drowning prevention

  • Identify methods for getting air while vertical (bobbing) and horizontal (rolling to back)

  • Use phrasing cues and body position adjustments to help a student float on the front and back

  • Size and fit a lifejacket

  • Define streamline body position

  • Select equipment helpful to use to improve kick mechanics while in streamline body position

  • Identify the benefits of teaching side and streamline positions at beginning stages

  • Identify strategies for reducing the risk of collision when teaching skills on the back

  • Conduct learning activities for teaching air recovery, front and back float, and streamline
